Mathematics and Computing
Explore how WRSS equips students with strong mathematical foundations and problem-solving skills, from classroom learning to national and international competitions.
Department Programmes/ Highlights
At WRSS, the Mathematics Department is committed to nurturing confident, resilient and inquisitive learners who are equipped with the mathematical knowledge and skills.
Our Mathematics programme aims to ensure that student develops a strong foundation and mastery of mathematics to function effectively in everyday life. Beyond building essential competencies, we provide opportunities for students with the interest and aptitude to deepen their mathematical understanding and pursue further studies in mathematics and mathematics-related fields.
Level-Wide Programmes
Students engage in authentic projects and performance tasks that encourage them to apply mathematical concepts to real-world situations. They analyse data, communicate their findings and collaborate with peers, while developing critical and inventive thinking, communication, collaboration and information skills. These meaningful learning experiences help students appreciate the relevance of mathematics in everyday life and cultivate the confidence to solve problems.
Talent Development Programmes
To nurture mathematical talent and a passion for problem-solving, the department provides students with a wide range of enrichment opportunities and competitions.
Secondary 1
Students are given opportunities to participate in the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC), where they are challenged with thought-provoking problems that develop logical reasoning and extend their problem-solving abilities.
Secondary 2 to 5
Selected students participate in the Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad (SASMO). The competition strengthens their school mathematics foundation while developing higher-order thinking, analytical reasoning and creative problem-solving skills.
Secondary 4
Selected students take part in the Exploring Mathematical Problem Solving with the Graphing Calculator Workshop and Competition, organised by Nanyang Junior College. Through this programme, students enhance their mathematical problem-solving skills and gain proficiency in using graphing calculators as powerful tools for mathematical exploration.
Students also participate in the Ngee Ann Polytechnic Math Challenge, organised by the School of Engineering. The competition provides authentic opportunities for students to apply mathematical concepts to solve real-world problems, reinforcing the practical applications of mathematics beyond the classroom.

Mathematics Beyond the Classroom
Our students are encouraged not only to excel as learners but also to contribute as ambassadors of mathematics. During the International Youth Gathering, our students facilitated engaging Mathematics Games workshops for visiting international students. Through these interactive activities, they shared their enthusiasm for mathematics while fostering cross-cultural friendships, collaboration and communication.
G1 Computing
G1 Computing is offered as an elective in the upper secondary for students to:
develop basic computational thinking skills along with 21st century competencies,
develop digital competencies in using digital tools to create digital artefacts, process information, communicate effectively and solve simple problems,
appreciate the legal, ethical and security issues relating to the use of computers,
gain understanding of emerging technologies and the impact of technology on society.
In the curriculum, students have the opportunity to design and develop a Scratch 3.0 game based on the theme "Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Us" which seeks to educate friends and family on the safe and responsible use of AI, covering topics such as the ethical use of generative AI the risks of misinformation and strategies for using AI safely.
